Principles Of Project Management: 6 Basic Ideas That Will Do The Job

A country director for a global corporation addressed employees about working together to make the company’s crucial projects successful. He then told them of the story of a swan. A swan swims beautifully above water without showing that both feet are busy propelling underneath. That, he said, is the essence of project management.

Without proper project management, companies’ projects can become directionless. These in turn will cause employees to be discouraged and can lose the company millions of money. Project management is important as it applies the disciplines of planning, organizing, and managing the company’s resources to make sure that a company’s project brings about the desired outcomes.

Project management does not have to be complicated. Here are six simple ways to ensure a project’s success.

Position a competent project manager. This person leads among the members of the project team and ensures necessary steps happen. This person also has the support of the investors and can effectively communicate with them. A competent project manager also knows how to work with the team.

Set up the project plan. Using project planning tools such as the MS Project, prepare that will outline the full project plan, critical delivery dates, employees responsible for an action, project milestones, and other key elements of the project. A chart is the visual guide of the project. It keeps everyone abreast with regards to the status of the project.

Draw up communication paths. Communication is highly important especially in large scale projects that involve people from different countries and various time zones. A clearly established communication path is important to keep the project progressing towards a successful finality. In contrast, lack of communication can cause the project to fail altogether.

Highlight the “How” over the “What”. Answer the question, “How was the project accomplished?” instead of just answering “What was accomplished?” great project management sees to it that successful projects mean those who worked on it are also happy and feel accomplished. In the long run, it is what project members affected by the project feel about it that really matters in defining its success.

Conclude the project. Given a capable project manager who knows what is happening both in the front lines and in the upper management, and team members who are process owners, a project can be completed according to deadline and approved budget. Conclude the project by making a record of learning experiences and significant achievements.

Acknowledge and celebrate success. Have mini-celebrations for milestone achievements during the project. Be able to acknowledge good work and reward the project team members for it. Towards the end of the project, throw a party as a means of showing appreciation to the project members who made it happen.

Too often our noses are stuck to the grind that we dont look up to see what we’ve accomplished and where we are headed. Good stuff! By the way, I work for a project management solution provider and we want our tool to be more fun/appealing. You can try it out as a game here – enjoy! http://www.severa.com/crm-fun
