CCNA Books – You Need to Know the Difference Between the 2 Types of Books
Choosing the right CCNA book can be a very hard process as there are so many which are available these days. There are broadly 2 categories of books used for CCNA preparation these days – the self-study books and the exam certification books.
The self study books do not have any pre-requisite networking knowledge and will provide foundation studies for the world of Cisco networks and IT networking. These books are extremely comprehensive and will take a deep look at the concepts which you will be required to know for the CCNA exam. For day to day work in your job as a CCNA networks engineer, this knowledge is also very useful.
If you use the books as a quick reference before the exam, the self study series of books might be overkill as they provide a lot of detail. This might not be so applicable to the experienced network engineer who is just looking for CCNA re-certification.
What you will find in the exam certification books is that they are well aligned with the objectives of the CCNA exam as published by Cisco. They are designed to be more as a quick reference and will not go as deep when you compare them to the self study books.
Since the exam certification books match exactly with the exam objectives issued by Cisco, you can be sure that they will prepare you well for the exam. It is extremely useful as a tool for CCNA exam re-certification.
For the relative newcomer to the networking world, you will find that you have more difficulty with the exam certification books because they are not as in-depth as the self study books. I believe that these books are still a good resource if you are combining the book material with a CCNA course you are taking with the Cisco academy or other authorized training centre.
I recommend that you get both kinds of books if you can. They can be used in a 2 step process. First, use the self study books to gain a deep understanding of the underlying networking concepts. Second, use the exam certification books to revise the material before you take the CCNA exam.
