La Provinciale: Exceptional venture fantasy in reference to an orphan gal who is chased by sky pirates and a malevolent government representative who wants to get their hands on the supernatural quartz that permits her to float and also keeps the secret to finding a treasure, a full island in the clouds. Stunning visuals, exhilarating set pieces and gripping characters make this a masterpiece of action film making; energized or otherwise, empowering a real sense of amazement. Cast includes Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill, Mandy Patinkin, and Andy Dick. (124 minutes,’86)
Metropolis: A private investigator and his nephew track a suspect to the futuristic Metropolis, meet a bizarre gal who is really an extremely commanding android, and decipher a message sent by a rebel forces leader who plans to take over the city. This is an amazing Japanese animated movie. It is written by Katsuhiro Otomo Akira, based on a visual novel by Osamu Tezuka called Astro Boy. Rich backdrops balance with cartoon looking lead characters, although dramatic storytelling and commanding visuals defeat film’s shortcomings. Cast includes Kei Kobayashi, Kohki Okada, Taro Ishida, and Kousei Tomita. (106 minutes, 2001)
The Air I Breathe: Four overlapping, connect the dots story lines, based on a Chinese proverb and titled “Cheerfulness,” “Delight,” “Grief,” and “Love,” make up this mess of a film. Starts out promisingly, as a disgruntled office android Whitaker unintentionally figures out that a horse race has been fixed, then it inexplicably shits into a cartoon like train wreck. Cast includes Kevin Bacon, Julie Delpy, Brendan Fraser, Andy Garcia, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Clark Gregg, Emile Hirsch, Woodland Whitaker, Kelly Hu, Evan Parke, Taylor Nichols, Winner Rivers, and Jon Bernthal. (97 minutes, 2008)
Educating Rita: This is an amusing adaptation of Willy Russell’s level play in reference to a youthful working class spouse who desires to better herself, and chooses boozy professor Caine as her mentor. Walters is phenomenal in her film debut performing her role and Caine has one of his best roles as her mentor. Cast includes Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Michael Williams, Maureen Lipman, Jeananne Crowley, and Malcolm Douglas. (110 minutes,’83)
Chicken Every Sunday: Carefree turn-of the century Americana in reference to get-rich-quick hopeful Dailey and his clingy spouse. Cast includes George Seaton, Dan Dailey, Celeste Holm, Colleen Townsend, Alan Youthful, and Natalie Wood. (91 minutes,’48)
Nomad: On the desolate steppes of’th-century Kazakhstan, when opponent tribes battle for freedom, mystic combatant Oraz saves a baby descended from Genghis Khan who is destined to join the country as “Mansur”. Historical fable has nasty sabers-on-horseback fights and excellent production layout (genuine human being add-ons) however trudging storytelling. Cast includes Kuno Becker, Jay Hernandez, Jason Scott Lee, and Mark Dacascos. (110 minutes, 2005)
An Innocent Man: Jimmie Rainwood had his life turned upside down. Two corrupt cops break in to his house suspecting to find drugs. They have the wrong address. To cover their tracks they plant evidence, and have him convicted. Three years later he is release from prison, and sets out to prove his innocence.
The Music of Chance: A thriller in regards to telepathic, suicidal Ivanek, powerless to command his powers, who moves his bad dreams to psychiatrist Harrold and causes chaos in a clinic. Cast includes James Spader, Mandy Roger Orristian, Kathryn Harrold, Zeljko I vanek, Shirley Horseman, and Harry Ditson. (98 minutes,’93)
